


WTF is phosphatidylcholine and why would I put it in a smoothie?
Good questions.
Phosphatidylcholine (PC) “is a phospholipid that enhances the free passage of nutrients into the cell while allowing waste and detritus out. By doing so, it works to enhance energy production within a cell” (BodyBio.com). For those of us who have biotoxin illness as our root cause of IBD, incorporating PC into your diet may be a game-changer. According to Dr. Jill Carnahan, PC “boosts your brain health and overall cognitive function and supercharges your mitochondria, the powerhouse of your cells.”
💩 Get ready for this, IBD warriors. Carnahan also says PC “makes up a whopping 90% of the phospholipids in your intestinal mucosa – the layer of mucus in your gut that acts as a protective lining. It’s been found that people with inflammatory bowel conditions have reduced phosphatidylcholine by up to 70% – and that replacing this crucial phospholipid can actually reverse and heal intestinal inflammation.” Wow!! That is great news!
I bet you’re saying, “I F***ING NEED THIS NOW!”
Not so fast.
🫘 When I began to research the various forms of PC, they weren’t so pretty. My research included a lot of shit ingredients, including soy-based and supplement yucki-ness. TexasHealth.org says “soy is the top GMO food produced in the US. According to the USDA, in 2014, farmers used 94% of soybean farmland in the US to grow genetically engineered soybeans.” Yikes. No bueno. In the past ten years, people around the globe have caught on. “The USDA already predicts domestic exporters in 2023-24 will ship their second-smallest soybean volume in a decade, though some of the recent numbers suggest the agency’s outlook may still be too optimistic” (Reuters). Other countries are saying, no thank you to our soybeans, and rightfully so.
I finally found an organic source of PC in the form of sunflower lecithin powder. DrAxe.com says “lecithin is a fatty substance that is found in your body as well as a multitude of plant and animal sources. Some of the most common types of lecithin include soybeans, egg yolks, and sunflower lecithin. It’s also naturally found in foods like meat, seafood and dairy products.” Then he states, “using a sunflower lecithin emulsifier or supplement is a great alternative to both egg and soy lecithin because it’s vegan, non-allergenic, non-GMO, and requires gentler extraction methods without the use of harmful chemicals.” Many will debate the lecithin part, but I’ve using this powder and have had no reaction whatsoever. But, of course, do whatever is best for your body. We all react differently.
I’ve actually had a noticeable boost using it in my new smoothie concoction. My brain fog has lifted; I feel sharper, even on humid days.
🥁 Drumroll! Here is my PC smoothie recipe that’s super easy to make. (C’mon, y’all know I hate to cook 🤣 ):
Organic sunflower lecithin - 2.5 grams suggested / I use 5 grams
Ground flax seeds - 1 tablespoon / I use this as a natural binder to detox toxins.
Plain Greek yogurt - 2 tablespoons / I use the brand Fage 5% fat. You can use a non-dairy substitute, like coconut yogurt.
Green juice blend - 1/2 cup / I use an organic blend of cucumber, celery, spinach, parsley, mint & lime. (My secret: I have an organic juice bar near my house. 😉 )
Unsweetened almond milk - 1/2 cup / I like the brand Elmhurst; its two ingredients are filtered water and almonds. How it should be!
Grind all that shit up in a NutriBullet or blender for 10 seconds and you’re ready to drink. It has a nice, smooth, and light taste and texture to me. Even my husband likes it. He says it “tastes like grass.”
